Boost Your Immunity with Fruits & Vegetables

Since fruits and vegetables provide such a great variety of food to choose from, they can be part of a well-rounded diet to boost your immune system. Strong immunity is crucial in order to resist harmful microorganisms from entering and damaging your body. Your immune system, which is a complex system of cells, tissues, proteins and organs, needs to be able to successfully detect and defend against viruses, bacteria, infections, diseases, parasites, and harmful pathogens.

A healthy diet will generally lead to a stronger immune system and as a result, build stronger immunity. Antioxidants and vitamins such as Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, and minerals such as selenium, zinc and others are all very important to boost immunity. Most of these vitamins and minerals are found within fruits and vegetables, and in combination with other sources of nutrition, you can maintain & build a strong defense system to keep you healthy.

Citrus fruits such as oranges and lemons provide a significant amount of Vitamin C that is an immune system booster. Kiwis and papayas have potassium, folate, and Vitamin C that help you fight off infection and keep body inflammatory markers down. Turmeric spice with its compound curcumin is very powerful and fends off various diseases & cancers, keeps inflammation low, is an antioxidant, and helps the heart & brain functions.

Ginger is a strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory spice. Garlic can reduce cholesterol and prevent dementia, help with colds & blood pressure, and may have antibiotic properties.

Leafy vegetables such as greens, spinach, lettuce, kale, among others improve immunity in the digestive system, and they provide a variety of key nutrients that strengthen the function of the immune system.

Pomegranates have amazing antioxidant benefits and a bright red color that originates from polyphenols. They improve digestion, blood flow, and fertility, they protect memory & the heart, they can reduce blood pressure & maybe even reduce insulin resistance. In today's world where viruses, bacteria, diseases, and infections have become commonplace, pomegranates may have antiviral and antibacterial effects to help boost immunity even further.

It is very important to not simply focus on one type of fruit and vegetable for consumption, but to balance your diet with other important fruits & vegetables. In addition, fruits & vegetables alone are not a substitute for a well-balanced nutritional intake, which may include solids & liquids such as meat & fish (if applicable), vitamins & minerals, and water, among other items.
